Loose meat sandwiches are a beloved comfort food, particularly in the Midwest, where they have earned a special place in the hearts (and stomachs) of many. These sandwiches feature a savory filling of seasoned ground beef, often served on a soft bun, making them a quick and satisfying meal option.
Ingredients
Scale:
1 lb ground beef
1 medium onion, finely chopped
1/4 cup beef broth
1 tablespoon mustard (yellow or Dijon)
1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
1 teaspoon garlic powder
1 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon black pepper
Soft hamburger buns (preferably fresh)
Shredded lettuce
Sliced tomatoes
Pickles
Cheese slices (optional)
Instructions
In a large skillet, heat a bit of oil over medium heat. Add the chopped onion and cook until translucent, about 3-4 minutes.
Add the ground beef to the skillet, breaking it apart with a spatula. Cook until it's browned and no longer pink, about 5-7 minutes.
Drain any excess fat from the skillet, if necessary.
Stir in the beef broth, mustard, Worcestershire sauce, garlic powder, salt, and pepper. Mix well to combine all ingredients.
Reduce the heat to low and let the mixture simmer for about 10 minutes.
While the filling simmers, toast the hamburger buns lightly on a separate skillet or grill until golden brown.
Once the filling is ready, pile it generously onto the bottom half of each toasted bun. Add desired toppings.
Cap with the top half of the bun and serve immediately while hot.
